All film is inspected, repaired,
and cleaned prior to transfer.
The Competitive Transfer
The first step in a film transfer order is the cleaning and repair procedure. Bad splices will be re-spliced to ensure the smoothest transfer possible. Depending on the age, condition and type of film stock being transferred the cleaning process will differ, but we really do clean every inch of the film. This initial inspection and cleaning process can sometimes take longer than the actual transfer which is why we usually ask for 2 weeks to complete your order. This process is something that most companies do not perform.
NOTE: When comparing film transfer companies, always ask for the method of transfer. There are many companies out there which simply project your film onto a screen and record that image with a camcorder. This is not a quality transfer method and you will lose detail in your film.
Once the film has been prepped, it is time to perform the telecine transfer. Film is projected directly into the lens of a broadcast 3-CCD camera.
Please contact a sales representative if you would like to view a full quality demo reel.
The Premium frame-by-frame transfer is by far the highest quality film transfer available today, as each frame of film is individually transferred.
Our retrofitted projector is one of the few in the world that has a manually adjustable brightness control which can make under or overexposed scenes look much better. The transfer technician will watch your film on a standard monitor as well as a waveform monitor and adjust the backlight brightness accordingly. This type of brightness adjustment is not available at most other companies.
The Premium transfer also allows the technician to evaluate whther the film has color shifted over time and correct any discoloration. If you have 16mm film, or film with a sound strip please refer to the Competitive Transfer, which is still above the quality of most other film conversion companies.
Transferring to hard drive is recommended if you are going to edit your footage. The file type is NTSC DV AVI, the most standard format across all editing platforms. File size runs about 13 gigabytes per hour of video. Hard drives can be PC or Mac formatted. Please call if you have any questions.
